George shares his thought from the week; God isn’t just for emergencies.
I was recently out on a walk when I noticed something as I left my house, something that I probably passed a thousand times, but never really given it much attention before.
It was a sign for a fire hydrant that was just on the side of the road. It was looking a bit shabby, a bit worse for wear, a bit neglected really, but I suddenly realized it was there for emergencies, that if there was sadly a fire in my street then the fire brigade would know where to get water to try and put that out. So it was a sign showing how an emergency could be sorted out.
And I got to thinking sometimes that’s how we treat God, isn’t it? We treat Him just for emergencies when things go wrong. We turn to Him, we pray, or we ask for help. But actually the Christian life is about a journey, walking with Jesus every day in the everyday things, not just for the emergency situations. And in Matthew 11, Jesus says,
Come to me, all you who are burdened or heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, because my yoke is easy and my burden is light, and I will give you rest for your souls.
Matthew 11:28-30
You know, sometimes you get get so stressed and so wound up in the everyday that we become tired, we become frustrated, we become angry – it’s not an emergency, it’s just life. But here Jesus is saying, “Be yoked with me, walk with me, and I will make sure as you go through this stuff we can do it together. I want to be part of your life, not just when you have emergencies, not just when things go massively wrong. I want to be with you every step of your journey.”
So as we journey along the pathway of life with Jesus, we get to know Him. We build our relationship with Him. He speaks into our lives. He maybe takes us to places we maybe wouldn’t even have imagined us going. So today and this week, let’s not just use Jesus for emergencies. Let’s be yoked to Him for the journey of life every day.
God bless you.
