The Unwanted King, a poem written by Liz Cooper.
I am Jesus, I was the unwanted king,
I am the Prince of Peace, the Son of God,
The Saviour of all the Earth,
And yet mankind has rejected me over and over again,
Even so , my Father, in His fathomless love, sent me from Heaven to Earth,
But not in royal palaces or luxury did I dwell,
For my kingship belongs in Heaven,
On earth I came to serve and to seek and save the lost,
The sacrificial lamb, born in the lowly stable.
I am Jesus, I was the unwanted king,
I am healer, provider and miracle maker,
There was joy and celebration when the blind could see and the lame could walk,
But the Pharisees didn’t see my compassion,
They didn’t see the wonder of the healing,
Instead fear, anger and hatred was worked up in them,
That I claimed to be the ‘Son of God’ and had healed on the Sabbath,
And so instead of revering me as the leader of their faith,
They sought to kill me,
They branded me a traitor, unwanted and rejected.
I am Jesus, I was the unwanted king,
I am the redeemer and liberator,
I bring freedom and hope to those Satan has bound,
Yet the people did not always see humanity restored or the release given,
When I commanded the legion of demons out of the man,
They only saw their pigs and livelihood drowned,
Fearing what they did not understand,
They begged me to go and leave them alone.
Not honoured and blessed, but feared and rejected by some of those I came to save.
I am Jesus, I was the unwanted king,
I am the bread of life and the giver of eternal life,
Yet some who followed eagerly at first fell away,
Because they didn’t really believe what I told them,
Even my earthly brothers had doubts,
People called me a fraud and liar,
And claimed my power came from the devil,
But I have given sight to the blind and the ones who claimed to know the truth were the ones who could not see.
I am Jesus, I was the unwanted king,
I am the Word and the light sent to show the way on earth below,
But darkness shuns the light, evil fears it will be exposed
And those who walk in darkness cannot see where they are going,
I came in my Father’s name,
And yet the pharisees searched the scriptures to find me, to find eternal life,
But could not see the one that was written about, the messiah, had already come,
They were blinded and couldn’t see the glory of God when it was shining in front of them.
I am Jesus, I was the unwanted king,
I am Rabbi, teacher and fisher of men,
Yet even one of my own twelve beloved disciples,
After all he had witnessed, all he had known,
Turned his back on me, betraying me with a kiss,
He fell into Satan’s snare and loved money more than Me,
How could He choose some silver coins over me?
How could He reject my truth for the father of lies?
I was betrayed to those who wished me dead, by a close and trusted friend.
I am Jesus, I was the unwanted king,
I am Lord of lords and King of kings,
Hosannas and shouts of joy greeted my arrival into Jerusalem,
Yet I didn’t come to be an earthly warrior,
My battle was not with flesh and blood,
I came to defeat sin and so death would lose its sting,
So the people’s cheers became jeers and the call to ‘crucify Him’ echoed around,
My sacrifice then was a thing beyond human comprehension,
Though the prophets had been foretelling the mystery for centuries.
I am Jesus, I was the unwanted king,
I am the great I AM and I now sit at the right hand of my Father on high,
I came in love, to heal and bridge the gap between my Father God and man,
And on the cruel cross, my death finally made the way,
If you have ever been unwanted or ever felt rejected,
Ever felt misunderstood or not loved,
Then I understand how you feel,
So open up your heart and let me in today,
I love you and invite you to join my kingdom,
For I reign sovereign for all eternity,
So come feast at my table,
And you will never be unwanted again.
